The Grant Agency of the Czech Republic announced the recipients of grants for standard projects today. Among them was Lenka Dědková's project entitled "Parental Knowledge of Early Adolescents’ Online Social Lives: The Role of Parental Mediation." The aim of the project is to find out which mediation strategies help parents gain insight into their children's online social activities during early adolescence, how they relate to teens' sharing or withholding of information, and what online activities are considered private by children and parents.

About the project

Although large parts of adolescents’ lives occur online, little attention has been paid to what parents know about their online activities and experiences and what parental efforts could enhance or limit such knowledge. Parental mediation, i.e., strategies used to regulate children’s media use, may help generate knowledge about online activities, but we lack robust evidence about this mechanism. Notably, parental mediation could also relate to adolescents’ own information management strategies that can contribute to or prevent parental knowledge. However, the link between adolescents’ disclosure or secrecy and parental mediation remains unexplored. To understand which parental mediation strategies function as knowledge-generating practices, the project will combine dyadic, longitudinal, and qualitative data and examine 1) what parents know about early adolescents’ online social activities, 2) the links between parental mediation and the (lack of) knowledge, 3) adolescents’ disclosure and secrecy, and 4) perceptions of privateness of online activities. The project period is from 2024 to 2026.

In addition to Lenka, the project of our member David Lacko called "Using Reaction Time for Unbiased Estimation of Prejudice: An Innovative Approach to Measurement and Modeling" at the Institute of Psychology of the Czech Academy of Sciences was also supported. On behalf of IRTIS, we congratulate you very much on this great achievement.
